Chapter Twenty-One
When I slowly gain consciousness from my deep sleep, Iâm startled by a wide awake Winston looking at me with his different colored eyes. He starts licking my face and pawing at my hair so Iâm forced to lift myself out of bed.
âWhy are you up so early Win?â I ask groggily while petting the top of his head. Me and Elliot made up a schedule of when Winston will sleep with either of us, and heâs already proving that heâs an early riser just like Elliot since itâs only six in the morning. I try to sink my head back into my pillows, but Iâm joined by Winston who climbs on top of my head and rests his tiny paws on me.
âElliot put you up to this didnât he?â I ask, only to receive a head tilt and another paw to the face.
âOkay Iâm up Iâm up.â I climb out of bed and head to the bathroom to clean up. I hear light pats on the floor, and I smile seeing Win follow closely behind me on my heels. I could get used to this little routine with him, but weâre definitely going to fix his sleeping schedule. I already have Elliot waking me up before the sun. I definitely need some coffee if Iâm going to function the rest of the day, so I throw on some sweat pants and head downstairs. To my surprise, I donât even hear Elliot when I enter the living room. Did I actually wake up before him for once? My question is quickly answered when he enters through the front door in a white v-neck covered in black grease stains.
âMorning Em.â He greets me while kneeling down to give Winston head scratches and belly rubs. Somehow he become more attractive every time I see him interact with Winston, I hate it.
âYouâre already working on your truck this early?â I ask as I walk to the kitchen with him following closely behind.
âI had a lot on my mind, Iâve been out there since five.â He lifts his shirt up to wipe his forehead, and a sliver of his abs peek out. Fuck, is the heater on? Suddenly it feels like a sauna in here.
âIs it almost done?â I need to start a conversation to get the image of his abs out of my head.
âAlmost, maybe Iâll let you drive it when itâs running.â He winks and turns around to start a fresh pot of coffee. His phone starts to ring in his pocket, and it catches my full attention because who could possibly be calling this early in the morning? He stares at the incoming call like heâs looking at a ghost, frozen in place.
âWho is it?â It must not be good if he has that paled look on his face.
âNobodyâ¦probably one of those spam numbers.â He grabs a mug out of the cupboard, but I can see his hands subtly trembling out of the corner of my eye.
The ringing stops but immediately starts again, and he lets out a loud grunt of frustration.
